Living up to your potential sounds tough, right? The mantra feels unattainable. It feels like a quest unworthy of pursuit. Why? Because the thought of being all you can possibly be feels overwhelming.
The thought of putting your efforts into yourself feels complicated. Crafting yourself into the person you ought to be is no easy task. It feels like an endless journey. It sounds like a farfetched notion only the best are capable of achieving.
Why focus on yourself when there is so much more that requires your attention?
Refraining from going after your own potential may sound complex. But it really isn’t. It may not be easy – nothing worthwhile ever is. The best things in life are often only achieved through effort. Some of the best moments are doused in sweat and a hearty dose of anxiety.
The concept of living up to your true potential feels impossible, but it is probable. You just need the right mindset to make it happen.
3 Significant Reasons You Aren’t Living Up to Your Potential
You may feel like the world is stacked against you. You might think your personal growth – your potential – doesn’t matter. But it’s not. And it does. Whether you choose to believe it or not, your path matters. You can either live it, or let it pass you by. The choice is yours.
Here are a few reasons your potential is being sorely wasted.
1) You put the needs of others first.
You will never reach your own potential if you delay your own ambition. Helping someone in need is one thing. But losing yourself, catering to their needs instead of yours for too long – this act will ruin you. And folks, let me tell you from personal experience: it won’t be pretty.
In order to be the best version of you, you must put yourself first. Because in the end, you are an asset. And you aren’t worth the risk. Losing yourself is a possibility you simply cannot afford.
Your personal potential can only handle so much. Treat it carefully.
2) You haven’t given your passions the opportunity to fly.
People mistakenly believe passion is inevitable. They assume we all have it, and therefore it will come about naturally.
Sadly, this is only partially true. Yes, we all have passion within us. It’s the zest we feel towards a painting hobby; the overwhelming surge of happiness we feel in our souls while pursuing that ambitious career.
But a viable passion is fragile. Like a piece of glass, it can shatter into an assortment of tiny, incomprehensible pieces. It can break until it’s never again capable of being put back together. It can fall apart in seconds. And it happens without providing you a viable backup plan worth latching onto.
Your passion must be given the opportunity to come alive. It must be provided the ability to breathe.
Sure, your focus may be constantly demanded elsewhere. But what if you provided your passion even a small percentage of that time? After all, some of the best creations take lifetimes to craft.
Provide your passion at least some opportunity to thrive. A mere moment can be all the difference in this thirst for potential.
3) Your focus is sorely misplaced.
Recognizing our own mistakes is tough. It’s far more complicated to understand when, how, and why that focus was misplaced.
This world is chaotic. How can we be expected to focus on everything at once? We can’t. Not really. Because really focusing on something requires more than just the time you set aside. It demands your whole self be involved. And when we start focusing too much on the experiences that don’t matter, when we start relishing in the toxicity of a past incident – that is when we lose touch with ourselves. That is when our focus is misplaced; when we stop living up to our potential.
But here’s the good news: it is possible for you to refocus.
Figure out what parts of your life matter most. Learn to accept that you cannot focus on everything – not fully, anyway. And finally, make the conscious decision to put more effort into the moments that matter.
It’ll make more of a difference than you realize.
